Joshua L Heazlewood

A/Prof Heazlewood received his PhD from La Trobe University in 2001. He moved to the Biochemistry Department at the University of Western Australia as a postdoctoral researcher examining mitochondrial function in plants using proteomics. In 2005 he received an ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship to further develop projects around the characterization of plant mitochondria and respiratory chain complexes. He spent 2007 at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (MPIMP) in Potsdam-Golm (Germany) as an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship. In 2008 he formed a research group at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) (CA, USA) and where he led the Plant Systems Biology group, focusing on the utilization of proteomics and bioinformatics to examine aspects of plant cell wall biosynthesis. In 2014, he was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship, at the School of BioSciences at The University of Melbourne. During this period, he drove the development of a mass spectrometry-based method to characterize nucleotide sugar transporters involved in the delivery of activated sugars for endomembrane glycan reactions. This work has resulted in the biochemical characterization of nearly 30 transporters in the past 5 years across plants, fungi and mammals.
